Professor Tobi Ogunro (President)

VINCENT OLORUNTOBI (TOBI) OGUNRO (PhD) is the President, Oka Descendants Union of North America (USA/Canada) (2018 - present). He is currently a faculty in the Civil & Environmental Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), NC, USA. He holds Ph.D. and MPhil degrees in Geotechnical Engineering from L'Institut National des Sciences Appliquees, Lyon (INSA Lyon), a MSc degree in Civil Engineering (Transportation Engineering option) from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a BSc degree in Civil Engineering (with a first-class distinction) from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) formerly University of Ife (Unife), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. At UNC Charlotte, he mentors students, lectures undergraduate and graduate courses, and conducts research in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental engineering. He has expertise and more than 25 years of experience of performing research and scholarly activities in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, performance evaluation of pavement materials, beneficial waste material reuse, solid waste management, and transportation in developing countries. He graduated and mentored over 23 graduate students (at Doctoral and master's levels) and supervised a couple of postdoctoral research associates. Some of his large research projects have been sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE), Publicly owned Power Utility Companies, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Departments of Transportation, among others. He is actively involved in mentoring and training international students including from Sub-Sahara Africa through his volunteering activities via remote delivery of courses and mentoring sessions and participation in international engagements (such the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) and Fulbright Scholar and African Diaspora Fellowship in Nigeria). Dr. Ogunro is joyfully married to an amazing woman and fortunate to have two wonderful children, a daughter and a son.
